Fairbanks, Alaska | 11/26/22 | Isaac Smoldon

The Anchorage Wolverines beat the Fairbanks Ice Dogs Saturday night, reclaiming their lead in the Club 49 Cup standings. Vaughn Makar made 32 saves in his first start for Anchorage, and secured his first junior win.

Fairbanks got off to a hot start, going up 2-0 before the halfway mark of the 1st. The Wolverines would be able to fight their way back into the game however, with Mason LeBel tipping a shot from Copper Morris in to cut the lead to one before the end of the opening frame. Then in the 2nd, Cameron Morris would score to tie the game, beating Hargraves for the second time in the contest. The Ice Dogs would regain their lead with seven minutes remaining in the 2nd, but Jackson Reineke scored for the second consecutive night to knot the game back up, this time at three goals apiece.

The 3rd period saw a back-and-forth battle, with Cameron Morris scoring halfway through to give Anchorage their first lead of the game. Fairbanks tied the game at four when Kole Altergott scored off a rebound in front of the Wolverines’ net, and the game looked like it might go into overtime. Before it could get there however, David Tolan tucked a shot past Hargraves with just 27 seconds remaining to ice the game, and Anchorage won by a final score of 5-4.

The Wolverines secure two points in both the Club 49 Cup and the Midwest division standings with the win, and they improve to a record of 4-1-1 against the Ice Dogs this season. Anchorage heads to Kenai next week for two games on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 AKST against the Brown Bears.
