Wolverines Win in Double OT

May 8, 2022

Anchorage Alaska | 5/8/22 | Isaac Smoldon

The Anchorage Wolverines defeated the Minnesota Wilderness, 4-3 in double overtime on Sunday night. Colton Friesen iced the game with 7:06 remaining in what ended up being the final frame, firing a shot off of the back of Konrad Kausch and into the net. The series now shifts down to Minnesota, with game four taking place on Friday, May 13th at 4:15 PM AKST.

The Wolverines started the scoring early in the opening frame, with Cameron Morris beating Matt Smith just 1:21 into the 1st. Minnesota would tie the game before the end of the period however, with Jared Mangan scoring his third goal of the playoffs at the 11:03 mark of the 1st.

In the middle frame, the Wilderness would take their first lead of the night when Cole Gordon scored just 46 seconds into the period. Anchorage would respond with two unanswered goals on the powerplay, from Friesen and Hunter Bischoff to take a one goal lead into the 3rd. Minnesota goaltender Matt Smith would leave the game with an injury following Bischoff’s tally, putting Konrad Kausch into the net for the Wilderness.

Much like the 2nd period, the Wilderness would score early into the final period of regulation, with Mangan finding his second of the night. That would be the final goal scored in regulation, with the remainder of the 3rd and an entire overtime frame elapsing scoreless. Both Raythan Robbins and Kausch made huge saves to keep their teams in the game, but Friesen’s shot from beneath the goal line secured Anchorage a huge win, putting them up two games to one in the series.

Sunday’s game will be the final time the Wolverines will play at the Ben this season, with all possible remaining games taking place in Minnesota. If Anchorage beats the Wilderness in one of two possible games this upcoming weekend, they move on to the Robertson Cup Semifinals, held in Blaine Minnesota.
