SOLDOTNA, AK — The Anchorage Wolverines opened Club 49 Cup play with a 5-2 road win over the Kenai River Brown Bears.
Anchorage local Jason Bourdukofsky got the Wolverines on the board first after Benson Peterson picked the puck up in the offensive zone and fed it to the slot for Bourdukofsky to finish.
Sheldon Rioux set up the Wolverines’ second goal, finding Michael Kotora along the goal line. Kotora one-timed a pass to Caleb Mahar at the near-side dot, where Mahar buried it to extend Anchorage’s lead to 2-0.
Five minutes into the second period, Oliver Morris and John Scott entered the Brown Bears’ zone on a 2-on-2 rush. Peterson joined the attack, and Morris sent a centering pass that Peterson slid past the goaltender to make it 3-0.
Kenai River answered with a goal late in the second period and another early in the third to cut the Wolverines’ lead to one.
With less than three minutes remaining, Bourdukofsky struck again. As the Brown Bears attempted to clear the puck with their net empty, Bourdukofsky pressured a defenseman behind the net and forced a turnover. He then reached around the back of the net and tucked the puck inside the post for his second goal of the night, restoring Anchorage’s two-goal cushion.
Seth Carlson sealed the 5-2 victory with an empty-net goal with just over a minute remaining, assisted by Morris.
Filip Hornacek made his second appearance between the pipes for Anchorage, turning aside 25 of 27 shots, backstopping the win for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines return home tomorrow night for their first Club 49 Cup matchup at the Sullivan Arena. Doors open at 5:45 pm for the 7:00pm puck drop.
