The Anchorage Wolverines swept the Kenai River Brown Bears with their win on Saturday night, picking up four points in both the Club 49 Cup and Midwest division standings. Trent Powell was a standout performer for the Wolverines, tallying three points with two goals and an assist. Shane Soderwall had an impressive night as well, making 38 saves on 40 shots.

The 1st period was a scoreless affair, but the 2nd would be anything but. Six goals were scored in the middle frame, four of them by Anchorage. Mason Lebel started the scoring for Anchorage in response to a Brown Bears tally and tied the game at one 4:36 into the period. Kenai River would counter, but Fedya Nikolayenya re-knotted the game, this time at two goals apiece. Then, on back-to-back powerplays, Soldotna native Powell scored twice, giving the Wolverines their first two-goal lead of the series, and leaving Anchorage with a strong foundation to work with in the 3rd. In the final period Anchorage stayed structured, and an empty net goal by David Tolan gave the Wolverines the win, by a final score of 5-2.

After Saturday’s game, Anchorage still leads the Club 49 Cup with 14 points. Next week the Wolverines will play Kenai River again, this time at home at the Ben.
