Wolverines Stunned in OT Thriller

Dec 11, 2021

Anchorage, Alaska | 12/10/21 | Isaac Smoldon

The Wolverines lost a tight contest 3-2 to the Kenai River Brown Bears on Friday night, off of Carter Green’s overtime goal. Green’s tuck was only the fifth of the contest, as both goaltenders made several spectacular saves to keep the game a low-scoring affair. Raythan Robbins had 24 saves on 27 shots in the loss, while his counterpart Byrant Marks stopped 23 of 25 to give his squad the win.

The 1st period saw both teams stymied offensively as Robbins and Marks came up huge on several key plays. Despite the shots being relatively close, Anchorage was shorthanded twice in the period, and their penalty kill was excellent, a trend that continued through the rest of the night.

Anchorage would get the scoring started just a couple minutes into the middle frame. Campbell Cichosz scored his second goal of the season off a power-play one-timer to get Anchorage the one goal lead. Kenai responded six minutes later with a goal of their own, scored by Byrce Monrean. It was almost a tie game headed into the 3rd, but a 5-3 goal from Anchorage with 8.6 seconds remaining, gave them a one goal edge headed into the next period.

The 3rd would be action packed, but once again neither team would able make much happen on the scoreboard thanks to the stellar play from both netminders. Anchorage maintained their one goal lead all the way up to the final minutes of regulation when Kenai tied it following a goal from Kaden Hjelm. With the game tied at two, the contest proceeded to 3 on 3 sudden-death overtime.

Carter Green ended the game just 44 seconds into overtime, giving the Brown Bears the 3-2 win. Both squads face off tomorrow night with 7 o’clock puck drop at the Ben Boeke for the Wolverine’s last home game of the calendar year. Fans are encouraged to wear their ugly Christmas sweaters and participate in the ugly sweater contest in between the 2nd and 3rd periods.
