ANCHORAGE, AK — The Anchorage Wolverines skated to a 7-3 victory over the Wisconsin Windigo tonight in a one-game matchup at Sullivan Arena.

Sheldon Rioux opened the scoring for Anchorage with a one-timer from the dot, assisted by Aiden Lawson, following several shot attempts by the Wolverines. Rioux wasn’t finished there, finding the back of the net again nine minutes later. Skating into the Wisconsin zone with a defender on him, Rioux charged the net and slipped the puck past the goaltender to give Anchorage a 2-0 lead.

Wisconsin answered two minutes later to get on the board, but Michael Kotora restored the Wolverines’ two-goal advantage before the end of the first period. After a flurry of shots, Kotora found the puck and finished the play to make it 3-1.

Seven minutes into the second period, the Wolverines capitalized on a Windigo turnover in their own zone. Oliver Morris collected the puck and passed it to John Scott, whose shot deflected off the goaltender’s pad and landed on Benson Peterson’s stick at the backdoor for the finish.

The Windigo cut the deficit to one, but captain Caleb Mahar responded before the end of the period to give Anchorage a two-goal cushion heading into the third.

The Wolverines took control in the final frame, with Lawson recording the first goal of the period before Leon Buzek added another. Buzek’s goal marked a homecoming moment after opening the season with the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL.

Anchorage closed out the night with a convincing 7-3 win, continuing its strong start to the home schedule.

The Wolverines return to action Saturday, October 24, when they face their first in-state opponent of the season, the Kenai River Brown Bears.
