Jan 17, 2023

Anchorage, Alaska | 1/17/23 | Isaac Smoldon

The Anchorage Wolverines play the Kenai River Brown Bears this upcoming weekend for the Wolverines’ first two home games of 2023. The pair of games mark the seventh and eighth time this season that Anchorage plays against the Brown Bears, with the Wolverines currently holding a record of 3-1-2 against Kenai River in the 2022-23 regular season. As always, these games count double for Anchorage, with points in both the Midwest division and the Club 49 Cup on the line.

The last series between both teams saw the Brown Bears win 5-4 in overtime before being blown out by Anchorage on Saturday 11-3. The Wolverines currently sit in seventh place in a tightly contested Midwest division, five points of a playoff position. Kenai River, who started the season strong, holds onto third in the division, and are six points ahead of Anchorage in the standings. Some of the Wolverines best games this season have come against in-state rivals Kenai River and Fairbanks, and they are in the lead in the Club 49 Cup race with 17 points against Alaskan teams. The Ice Dogs are in second with 13 points, and Kenai brings up the rear with seven.

As Anchorage looks to remain on top of the Club 49 Cup, while making up ground in the Midwest division, Kenai will look to do the inverse, jumping ahead of Fairbanks in the Club 49 Cup and holding onto their NAHL playoff berth. Both games this weekend start at 7 p.m. AKST, with tickets available at tickets.anchoragewolverines.com. The Wolverine live broadcast is also available to watch exclusively on HockeyTV.com.
