ANCHORAGE, AK — The Anchorage Wolverines blew the Minnesota Mallards out of the water in Minnesota’s first-ever appearance at the Sullivan Arena, earning a dominant 7-2 victory.
Loic Nasreddine opened the scoring just a minute and a half into the contest. After Leon Buzek sent the initial shot toward the net, Nasreddine found the loose rebound and put it away.
Balint Lobenwein added the second goal in the 13th minute. Buzek sent another shot on net, which Landon Greenough tipped to the far side, where Lobenwein was waiting at the backdoor to one-time it home.
Just 40 seconds later, Benson Peterson gave the Wolverines a 3-0 advantage. Andrei Gandurov carried the puck into the zone before dropping it back to Peterson, who settled the puck and fired a shot top shelf.
John Scott made it four before the midway point of the first period. After his initial shot was turned aside, Scott collected the rebound, which bounced behind the netminder and into the net.
John Scott picked up right where he left off after the first period, scoring just moments into the second to give the Wolverines a 5-0 lead. Easton Walters was credited with the assist on Scott’s second goal of the night.
The Wolverines’ sixth goal came from Michael Kotora. After the Mallards’ netminder sprawled across the crease to make a stick save on Sheldon Rioux’s shot, he couldn’t recover in time to stop Kotora’s finishing tap-in.
Minnesota answered three minutes later with its second and final goal of the contest.
With just 45 seconds remaining, Blake Mahar centered the puck into the slot for Peterson, who buried his second of the night and the Wolverines’ seventh goal.
Defensively, the Wolverines were just as dominant, holding Minnesota to a mere 11 shots on goal throughout the contest: three in the first period, three in the second and five in the third.
The two teams wrap up the series tomorrow with a 7:00pm puck drop at the Sullivan Arena.
The live Military Jersey Auction also concludes tomorrow, with five more player-worn jerseys up for grabs. Can’t make it to the game? Head to the online auction by clicking HERE.
