Wolverines Defeat the Brown Bears in Saturday Slugfest

Dec 11, 2022

Anchorage, Alaska | 12/10/22 | Isaac Smoldon

The Anchorage Wolverines played their final home game of the 2022 calendar year on Saturday night, and finished with a bang, beating the Kenai River Brown Bears by a final score of 11-3. The game sets the Franchise record for the most goals scored in one game, as well as the record for the widest margin of victory.

The game seemed to start as any other, with Kenai River and Anchorage trading goals in the early parts of the 1st and 2nd period. The Wolverines would establish control in the game after Aiden Westin scored late into the middle frame to put his team up 5-3. In the 3rd, Anchorage added two more goals to their lead before the halfway point of the period, and that was when things began to devolve into madness. After several scrums, altercations and major penalties, the Brown Bears found themselves down two men for the nearly all of the remainder of regulation. The Wolverines took advantage of this, and scored four goals on the powerplay, crushing Kenai River in front of the home crowd.

Multiple players for Anchorage had multi-point nights, with Jackson Reineke, Layten Liffrig, Clay Allen, and Westin scoring three points in the contest, and Trent Powell potting four, two goals and two assists. The Wolverines went 6/10 on the powerplay, and outshot Kenai River 52-24. Shane Soderwall made 21 saves in his eighth win of the season.

With the win, the Wolverines now have 17 points in the Club 49 Cup standings, eight points better than second place Fairbanks. Anchorage will now travel to Wisconsin to play the Windigo for their final two games before Christmas break. The two games take place Friday and Saturday at 4 p.m. AKST, and can be watched exclusively on HockeyTV.
