Wolverines defeat Jr. Blues in game two, continues win streak

Dec 16, 2023

The Anchorage Wolverines continue their winning streak after tonight’s victory against the Springfield Jr. Blues.

Cole Christian drilled the first two goals for the Wolverines, making him the overall point leader for the team with a total of 28 points.

Christian and Fedya Nikolayenya lead the team in goals with 11, Nikolayenya is the team’s second point leader with 26 overall points to date.

Throughout the 60-minute play time, the Wolverines never let up their goal advantage. Blake Markwell found the back of the net for the first time since the NAHL Showcase, bringing the Wolverines to 3-0.

The Jr. Blues came back in the second with two goals, closing the gap to 3-2, Wolverines leading.

Danny Bagnole got his fourth goal of the weekend 12 minutes into the final period, bringing the Wolverines back to a two-point lead.

A minute and a half after Bagnole’s goal, Landry Schmuck zipped one past Beerman closing the lead yet again.

With just over six minutes left in the contest, Trent Powell went to the box for 2-minutes after a roughing call. 20-seconds following Powell’s penalty, Blake Markwell was sent to the box with a five-minute major boarding and misconduct penalty.

With Powell and Markwell in the box, the Jr. Blues went on a five-on-three powerplay for over a minute and a half.

The Jr. Blues were almost able to capitalize on the powerplay, but Beerman stretched out for a glove save with just under four-minutes left in the game.

After their failed attempt to score, the Jr. Blues pulled their goalie, giving them a three-man advantage.

Anchorage held Springfield off and came and scored a penalty kill goal with 10 seconds left in the contest, which the refs called back.

There was confusion as to why the goal was called back, which has not been confirmed through the NAHL. Tyler Hennen was originally penalized for body checking and the Wolverines bench was charged with a minor, which resulted in the PK goal to be recalled, but neither penalty has been reflected on the penalty sheet.

The final game of the series is tomorrow with a 3:05pm puck drop. Come to Matanuska Brewing Company and cheer on the Anchorage Wolverines!
