ANCHORAGE, AK — After tonight’s win, the Anchorage Wolverines have climbed into second place in the Midwest Division, trailing only the Fairbanks Ice Dogs.
Anchorage struck first late in the opening frame when Loic Nasreddine wrapped around the back of the net and tucked the puck inside the near post with just over two and a half minutes remaining in the period.
Newly appointed Assistant Captain Balint Lobenwein doubled the Wolverines’ lead six minutes into the second period. After Landon Greenough fired a shot toward the net, Lobenwein was there to bat the puck past the Wilderness netminder, with Greenough and Jack McKenna earning assists.
Goaltender Maverick Avent was on the verge of a shutout before Minnesota broke through with just 90 seconds remaining in regulation, cutting Anchorage’s lead to one.
With the Wilderness’ net empty in a late push for the equalizer, Minnesota attempted a pass in the Wolverines’ zone. Captain Caleb Mahar got his stick on the puck, deflecting it down the ice and sending it into the empty net to secure the 3-1 victory for Anchorage.
The Wolverines’ work is far from finished. The two teams meet again tomorrow and Sunday at Sullivan Arena, with Anchorage looking to complete the weekend sweep and continue its climb up the Midwest Division standings.
