Anchorage, Alaska |4/1/23 | Isaac Smoldon

The Anchorage Wolverines won 7-4 on Saturday night, picking up a huge two points against the Chippewa Steel. Shane Soderwall made several key saves for his team in the win, ending the night with 38 stops in total.

Anchorage got the start they wanted, when Aiden Westin scored 29 seconds in on the first shift of the game. Then Tomek Haula extended the lead to two when he scored seven minutes later. Thanks to seven saves from Soderwall, the Wolverines went into the middle frame up 2-0.

Soderwall would continue to make several incredible saves in the middle period, but Chippewa hemmed Anchorage in their own end as they attempted to battle their way back into the game. Two goals from the Steel tied the game before the start of the 3rd, with the Wolverines now forced to try and re-establish their lead.

Anchorage would do just that one minute into the final period with Jackson Reineke scoring his 29th goal of the season off a drop pass from Cameron Morris. Aiden Westin extended the lead back to two halfway through the frame, potting his third of the weekend. The last three minutes were chaotic, but the Wolverines came out on the better end of things, thanks to Fedya Nikolayenya and Reinke each scoring an empty net goal. Shortly after Tyler Hennen added an insurance marker, ensuring that despite two late tallies from the Steel, Anchorage would win 7-4.

The Wolverines will play Chippewa for the final time this regular season on Sunday at 4 p.m. AKDT. All fans under 18 will be admitted into the Ben for free, with all kids encouraged to stay after the game for a skate with the Wolverines event. The organization also asks all fans in attendance to wear orange in recognition of Leukemia awareness.
