Soderwall Solid as Wolverines Win in a Shootout

Shane Soderwall made 28 saves for his team during a defensive slugfest in Eagle River Wisconsin, as the Anchorage Wolverines topped the Wisconsin Windigo 2-1 in a shootout. Anchorage split the weekend with the Windigo thanks to the win, picking up two points in the Midwest division standings.

After a 12-goal game the night before, both teams were seemingly determined to have a more defensive contest. The Wolverines would get the first goal of the game with just 24 seconds remaining in the 1st, as Joe Cesario scored thanks to assists from Kory DiPonio and Cameron Morris. Anchorage would then hold that lead all the way through the middle frame and for most of the 3rd thanks to strong defensive play and an excellent performance from their goaltender. Wisconsin would be able to force overtime however, scoring late into the 3rd period to tie the game at one goal apiece. After a scoreless overtime, the game went into a shootout, and thanks to several more excellent saves from Soderwall, and two excellent moves from Jackson Reineke and Kyle Bauer, Anchorage would skate away with two points, while the Windigo picked up just one.

This weekend’s games were the final two that the Wolverines will play in the Lower 48 in the 2022-23 regular season. Anchorage returns home this week and will play the Janesville Jets on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. AKST. Both games are available to watch on HockeyTV, or tickets to the Ben can be bought at tickets.anchoragewolverines.com.
