Soderwall Shines in Saturday Night Shutout

The Anchorage Wolverines beat the Janesville Jets in the two teams’ second meeting of the weekend, winning by a score of 3-0. Shane Soderwall was excellent for Anchorage, making 40 saves in his shutout performance.

The opening frame was back-and-forth with neither team able to find the back of the net for much of its duration. With just 14 seconds left in the 1st the Wolverines would change that however, as Mason LeBel capitalized off of a powerplay rush from Aiden Westin, to give Anchorage the lead heading into the 2nd. The middle frame was quiet, with the score remaining 1-0 through the 2nd period and into the start of the 3rd. The Wolverines would gain firm control of the game in the final period, with Hayden Hennen scoring four minutes into the frame before LeBel tallied his second of the night to extend his team’s lead to three goals. After another long strech of scoreless hockey, the Jets pulled their netminder early, playing with an extra attacker for much of the last five minutes. Despite this, Soderwall and Anchorage’s defense remained solid, and the Wolverines won by a score of 3-0.

Both teams have gained two points in the Midwest division standings following this weekend’s pair of games. The first game of the New Year for both teams will take place this Wednesday at 4 p.m. AKST, as the two squads face-off against each other for the third time this week.
