Same Song Second Verse; Anchorage Beats Springfield 2-1

Apr 22, 2022

Springfield, Illinois | 4/22/22 | Isaac Smoldon

For the second time in as many nights, the Anchorage Wolverines defeated the Springfield Jr. Blues by a final score of 2-1. Raythan Robbins had another 34 saves for the Wolverines in the contest, with Kory DiPonio and Hunter Bischoff notching goals for their squad. Anchorage now leads the series 2-0, and with a win in their next game on Sunday would advance to the second round of the Robertson Cup Playoffs.

Unlike Thursday night, Anchorage would be the team to break the ice, scoring just five minutes and forty seconds into the 1st period. Hunter Bischoff potted his first of the playoffs off of a drop pass from Talon Sigurdson. The Wolverines held the lead until late in the 2nd period, when Cole Dubicki scored on the powerplay to tie the game at one. Thanks to the late period rally from the Jr. Blues, both teams went into the 3rd tied, 1-1.

Unfortunately for the home team, Anchorage would do the exact same thing that they did on Thursday, with Kory DiPonio scoring to give the Wolverines a 2-1 lead that they would never relinquish. Anchorage’s defense was helped along by several big saves from Raythan Robbins, including a glove stop with just 1:15 remaining.

The Wolverines now lead Springfield two games to none, and with a win on Sunday night would sweep the second seeded Jr. Blues to move on to round two of the Robertson Cup Playoffs. Puck drop for game three is set at 4:05 AKST, with the broadcast available exclusively on HockeyTV.
