Kenai River Comes Back to Beat Anchorage in OT

Anchorage, Alaska | 12/09/22 | Isaac Smoldon

The Anchorage Wolverines picked up one point in the Club 49 Cup and Midwest division standings following Friday night’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Kenai River Brown Bears. Anchorage still leads the Club 49 Cup, with 15 points in the battle between all three Alaska NAHL teams.

Anchorage was put back on their heels early in the game when Kenai River scored two goals before the two-minute mark of the 1st period. The Wolverines would fight their way back into the game however, and they were able to re-knot the game before the end of the opening frame, following a pair of goals from David Tolan and Danny Reis. In the 2nd, Fedya Nikolayenya would score twice to give Anchorage a two-goal lead, scoring first on the powerplay, and then at even strength shortly after. The Wolverines looked to finish off the Brown Bears in the 3rd, but unfortunately for Anchorage, Kenai River was far from dead. The Brown Bears scored halfway through the final period of regulation, and then followed that by tying the game at four after a powerplay goal from Hunter Newhouse. In overtime, a turnover from the Wolverines resulted in a two-on-one for Kenai River, and on that rush, Garret Drotts would beat Anchorage netminder Eino Rissanen and secure the Brown Bears the win.

Both teams will play against each other tomorrow night, at 7 p.m. at the Ben. Tickets for the game are available for purchase now at anchoragewolverines.com, and for those not able to attend in person, the game can be watched exclusively on HockeyTV.
