For the first time in six games, the Anchorage Wolverines are leaving the ice in defeat after a 6-2 loss against the Wisconsin Windigo.

Wisconsin took the early lead, drilling two in before the first frame finished. Anchorage’s Fedya Nikolayenya refused to go to the locker room down-two, finding the back of the net with just 42 seconds left in the first, with the assist coming from Tai Ushio and Jack Darby.

Trent Powell opened the second period by tying the game and officially bringing the Wolverines back into play. Eight minutes later, Wisconsin again took the lead with a golf-like chip over Liam Beerman’s right shoulder.

While this is only the second series the two teams have met, there was a familiar face on the ice tonight.

Jack Thomas, previously a defenseman for the Fairbanks Icedogs, made his debut with the Windigo tonight, securing his first point in the new sweater when he assisted Maxwell Martin in their fourth goal of the night.

The game slowly slipped away from the Wolverines throughout the third period. Will Schumacher widened Windigo’s lead with two goals coming in at 10:20 and 18:30 to finalize the score at 6-2.

The Wolverines will attempt to split the series and squeeze out two points toward league standings when the teams face off again tomorrow with another 4:00pm puck drop.
