The Anchorage Wolverines walk off the ice tonight without a point for the first time in the past 20 games.

The Wolverines fell 2-3 after a scrappy game against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs. The first period went scoreless, giving both teams a clean slate coming into the second frame.

Anchorage’s Oliver Salo grabbed the first goal of the game half way through the second period, giving the Wolverines their only lead of the night.

The Ice Dogs opened the final frame with two goals, Nolan Abraham securing the first just 2:55 into the period and Reece Cordray following two minutes later, putting the Ice Dogs up by one.

In an amazing attempt to level the score, Tyler Hennen snuck the puck through Tyler Krivtsov’s five hole from behind the goal line; but after review, the goal was called back due to two double minor infractions for high sticking called on Fedya Nikolayenya.

With the score turned back to 1-2 in Fairbanks’ favor, Cordray out skated the Wolverines’ last defensemen, finding the five hole and buring the Ice Dogs third goal of the night.

The Wolverines found themselves in a 6v3 situation after the Ice Dogs received two two-minute penalties back-to-back. With the Wolverines pulling goaltender Liam Beerman to give the additional man, Hennen was able to find the back of the net with just 10 seconds left on the clock.

The time ran out for the Wolverines, with the buzzer sounding while the puck was in Fairbanks’ zone, unable to push the game past regulation.

This loss does not take the Wolverines out of the playoffs, but tomorrow’s game is vital for the teams’ position.

The Wolverines are still tied for first with the Wisconsin Windigo but need one point to secure its ranking. The team MUST win or push the game past regulation to clinch first place.
