After a 3-2 overtime win at home on Friday night, the Anchorage Wolverines were poised to sweep their cross state rivals the Kenai River Brown Bears on Home opening weekend. On Saturday night, they accomplished that goal.
The Anchorage Wolverines dominated in the first part of the opening period, with Oliver Salo scoring the first goal of the night one minute and 22 seconds into the period. Kenai River was unable to score on the Wolverines netminder Liam Beerman, who made some incredible saves throughout the period.
The Wolverines led heading into the 2nd, and former Brown Bear Bryce Monrean would add to the lead when he got one into the back of the net at the 15 minute and 15 second mark. The Brown Bears would remain frustrated through the period, racking up 4 penalties for slashing and roughing. The Wolverines lead after two periods 2-0.
The third frame remained scoreless until the 17 minute and 34 second mark when Kade Shea scored a game clinching goal, bringing the Wolverines to 3-0 late in regulation. Beerman remained solid in net, and Anchorage won by a final score of 3-0.
Kenai’s netminder Peter Wickstumer went 28/31 and Anchorage’s netminder Liam Beerman went 20/20 during the night. With the win, the Wolverines improve to 5-2-2 on the season.
Next weekend the Wolverines will play just one game, Saturday, October 14th, against the Minnesota Wilderness at home. Tickets are available now at ticket.anchoragewolverines.com, or the game can be watched live or on-demand exclusively on nahltv.com.
