The Anchorage Wolverines beat the Fairbanks Ice Dogs 6-2 at the Big Dipper Ice Arena in Fairbanks, shocking the Ice Dogs in their home opener. Anchorage scored five unanswered goals in the contest and went three for four on the powerplay, rolling past the home team with an impressive offensive performance. Shane Soderwall also played well in between the pipes for the Wolverines, making 25 saves on 27 shots.

Fairbanks got the first goal of the game, scoring just a minute and fifty-six seconds into the 1st period. Anchorage would have a chance to respond when they went on the powerplay for the first time with seven minutes left in the frame, and they capitalized quickly, with Aiden Westin potting his third of the year off assists from Layton Liffrig and Cameron Morris. The Icedogs regained the lead late in the period, but with under two to play in the 1st Wilson Dahlheimer scored another powerplay goal to tie the game going into the middle period.

The rest of the game would be dominated by the Wolverines, with Anchorage scoring two goals in both the 2nd and the 3rd period. Logan Lyke got what would eventually be the game winning goal off an excellent pass from Andy Ramsey, and then Trent Powell added to the lead two and-a-half minutes later. In the 3rd, Mortiz Lackner scored his first junior goal just over five minutes in, and later in the frame, Cameron Morris added to the Wolverines’ lead, scoring his first goal of the season on the powerplay. Morris’s goal would be the last of the contest, with Anchorage winning by a final score of 6-2.

Lackner ended the game with three points, tallying two assists alongside his goal. Morris and Westin both had two points apiece, with the rest of the Wolverines’ scoring being more evenly dispersed. In fact, of the 19 skaters dressed for Anchorage, 13 had at least one point in the game. The Wolverines and Ice Dogs play each other once more on Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. AKDT.
