Wolverines Take Game One of Midwest Division Finals

May 6, 2022

Anchorage Alaska | 5/6/22 | Isaac Smoldon

The Anchorage Wolverines won game one of the second round of the Robertson Cup Playoffs, beating the Minnesota Wilderness by a score of 4-1. Anchorage scored two of their goals on the penalty kill, with Drake Albers breaking the ice shorthanded with 34 seconds remaining in the 2nd. The Wolverines would be unable to carry the lead into the 3rd however, as Cole Crusberg-Roseen scored with just four seconds remaining in the frame to tie the game at one.

In the third period both goaltenders continued to play well, keeping the game tied until the 11:03 mark of the final frame. Cooper Morris forced a turnover in the middle of the ice, and a great tip by Matt Johnson gave Anchorage their second shorthanded goal of the game and the lead. A subsequent goal from Hunter Bischoff and an empty-net goal from Albers gave the Wolverines their first playoff home win, by a final score of 4-1.

Raythan Robbins earned first star of the game with a 34 save performance, and remains undefeated in the playoffs. Matt Smith of the Wilderness had 28 saves in the loss. Both teams play tomorrow at 7 PM AKST, in game two of the second round.
