The Anchorage Wolverines defeated the Fairbanks Ice Dogs 3-1 on in Friday’s game, gaining two points in the Club 49 Cup and Midwest division standings. The contest marked the first time that the Ice Dogs played against Anchorage at the Sullivan Arena this season.
The Wolverines started the scoring six minutes into the 1st, thanks to a Sam Evert takeaway that he converted into a goal. Anchorage carried their one-goal lead into the middle period, where Brock Develin would score the eventual game winner on a fast break at the end of a Fairbanks powerplay. Devlin’s tenth goal of the season gives him a team best 53 points on the year. In the 3rd, Tai Ushio would add an insurance marker on the powerplay, his 17th goal of the season. The Ice Dogs scored just one goal on the evening, with netminder Michael Manzi making 24 saves on 25 shots.
“I really liked what I saw tonight,” said head coach Nick Walters following the win. “We talked about shot blocking, hits and takeaways before the game. I said if everyone can get two of those each, we’ll win this game. I felt like we executed that well tonight.”
With the win, the Anchorage snaps a three-game losing skid, and simultaneously breaks up a streak of three wins for Fairbanks. Both teams will play again Saturday, with puck drop occurring at 7:30 p.m. AKST. Tickets are available now at tickets.anchoragewolverines.com.
