Anchorage Tops Springfield in OT

Springfield, Illinois | 2/2/23 | Isaac Smoldon

The Anchorage Wolverines beat the Springfield Jr. Blues 4-3 Thursday night, winning in overtime. The Wolverines were led to victory by several multi-point nights from their forward corps, with Trent Powell, Tomek Haula and Jackson Reineke all recording two points in the contest.

Anchorage outshot Springfield 17 to 13 in the opening frame, but despite the litany of shots, neither team was able to score.  That would change early in the 2nd when Reineke broke through the deadlock with a shot from the point that bounced off the Jr. Blues’ defense into the back of the home team’s net. Springfield tied the game five minutes later, but then Andy Ramsey scored his first of the season to give his team the lead back before the halfway point of the middle period. A pair of goals from Cole Lonsdale of the Jr. Blues would flip the game on its head, with Springfield gaining the lead for the first time in the contest, and the at the start of the 3rd period, the home team would be in the lead by a score of 3-2.

The Wolverines were far from defeated however, and Haula tied the game early in the 3rd with Anchorage on the powerplay. Neither team would score in the final period of regulation, and the game went into overtime, tied 3-3. In OT Powell would win the game for the Wolverines, scoring after being sprung on a breakaway by Haula three minutes into the extra frame.

With the win Anchorage is now just two points out of a playoff spot, with 42 points so far on the season. The two teams play each other twice more this weekend, Friday at 4:05 AKST and Saturday at 3:05 AKST. Both games are available to watch exclusively on HockeyTV.
