The Anchorage Wolverines took on their cross-state rivals in the Kenai River Brown Bears on Friday night, losing by a final score of 4-2. After finishing in last place in the 2021-22 season, the Brown Bears have had a hot start to the current year, and their win keeps them in third place in the Midwest division. Anchorage meanwhile sits at sixth place, six points back of a playoff position.

Kenai River scored the first goal of the contest halfway through the opening period, but the Wolverines were quick to respond, with Fedya Nikolayenya potting his fourth of the season. Then in the 2nd, Kory DiPonio lit the lamp for the first time this year, scoring off of a fast break to give Anchorage the lead. The Brown Bears dominated the 3rd period however, scoring three unanswered goals to win the game by a final score of 4-2. Garett Drotts of Kenai River scored the game tying and game winning goal, and picked up an assist on the third goal of the period.

Both teams play each other tomorrow night in Kenai, at 7:30 AKST. Saturday’s game, like Friday’s, has repercussions for both the Midwest division standings, as well as the Club 49 Cup standings, in which the Wolverines are in first place. The game is available to watch exclusively on HockeyTV.com.
